IVC Filter

IVC or Inferior Vena Cava filters are small wire like devices implanted into the largest vein in the body to help prevent blood clots from reaching the heart and lungs.

Many patients that had these filters implanted suffer from severe side effects such as the filter breaking apart, migration of the filter, perforation of nearby organs, and even becoming embedded in the vein.  Due to insufficient instructions and warnings provided by the manufacturers of these filters, doctors have left these filters in place for longer periods of time increasing the risk of these side effects. There have been nearly 1000 events reported to the FDA regarding these filters and the complications.  In 2014 the FDA issued a safety communication that recommends the removal of these filters after the original problem has passed.
